Malaysian Prime Minister Inaugurates Infineon's 200mm SiC Fab: A Milestone for the Semiconductor Industry

08/08/2024

On August 7, 2024, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ceremoniously inaugurated the first phase of Infineon's cutting-edge 200mm Silicon Carbide (SiC) fabrication site. This significant event marks a pivotal moment for Malaysia’s burgeoning semiconductor sector, reinforcing the nation’s position as a key player in the global tech arena.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim lauded Infineon's €2 billion investment, highlighting its impact on the country’s economic and technological landscape. “Infineon’s remarkable project reinforces Malaysia’s position as a rising major global semiconductor hub,” said the Prime Minister. He emphasized that the establishment of this advanced facility not only promises substantial job creation and economic opportunities but also stands to attract a network of suppliers, universities, and top-tier talent.

The first phase of the €5 billion investment will lay the foundation for the world's largest and most competitive 200mm SiC power fab. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to generate up to 4,000 jobs upon the completion of its second phase, reflecting Infineon’s commitment to long-term growth and innovation in Malaysia.

Beyond its economic benefits, the fab is poised to play a crucial role in advancing Malaysia’s environmental goals. By enhancing electrification and improving the efficiency of various applications—including electric vehicles and renewable energy systems—the new facility will contribute significantly to global decarbonization efforts. “Thus, technology made in Malaysia will become a central part of global decarbonization efforts in the future,” the Prime Minister added.

Infineon’s journey in Malaysia began in 1973 with its operations in Melaka. The company’s footprint expanded in 2006 when it opened Asia’s first front-end fabrication plant in Kulim. Today, Infineon employs over 16,000 people across the country, underscoring its deep-rooted presence and continued investment in Malaysia.

The inauguration of this new SiC fab represents a significant leap forward for Malaysia, positioning it at the forefront of the semiconductor industry while aligning with global sustainability goals.
