In an exciting advancement for the automotive industry, Cambridge-based QPT is embarking on the development of a cutting-edge 1MHz, 400V, 60kW GaN automotive traction inverter, with funding from the UK’s Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC). Named 'Verde', this innovative project aims to harness the power of Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology to deliver a high-performance inverter featuring a sinewave output, which is crucial for efficient electric vehicle operation.

QPT's approach incorporates advanced microwave design techniques that leverage GaN’s lightning-fast switching capabilities. This technology is a significant shift from traditional methods that often involve slowing the gate drive. By optimizing the switching behavior, QPT is poised to tackle previous challenges related to thermal management and electromagnetic interference (EMI) that have hindered GaN's adoption in automotive applications.

“Our system technology enables GaN to be used for high-power, high-performance applications, overcoming the thermal and EMI problems that have stopped GaN from being used in automotive in the past,” stated Rupert Baines, CEO of QPT. The company is already engaging with automotive manufacturers interested in collaborating on this groundbreaking technology, signaling a strong interest in the potential of GaN to transform electric vehicle propulsion systems.

Joining QPT on the Verde project is Ram Innovations, which will contribute to the project's development and its eventual market introduction. “This APC investment will accelerate the technology to market by at least two years,” commented Peter Green, CEO of RAM Innovations. “This project will create a demonstrator that will be showcased at the Cenex Expo at UTAC Millbrook UK in September 2025.” This exhibition will present a vital opportunity for industry stakeholders to experience firsthand the advancements made possible through the Verde initiative.

With the support of the APC and strategic partnerships in place, QPT is positioning itself at the forefront of automotive innovation, promising a future where GaN technology can lead to more effective, efficient, and powerful electric vehicle solutions.
